UTM TRACKING: A CAMPAIGN NAMING SYSTEM YOUR CRM CAN USE

UTM tracking tags a visit with campaign context. It is useful only when teams name campaigns consistently and preserve the source through forms, calls, CRM stages, and sales outcomes. A perfectly tagged click that disappears at the lead handoff will not answer which spend produced revenue.

PRESERVE SOURCE THROUGH THE HANDOFF

Test a real journey on mobile: click the campaign URL, submit a form, inspect the CRM record, and follow it to an opportunity. Check redirects, consent behavior, cross-domain booking tools, and hidden fields. For calls, pair campaign landing pages with call tracking where appropriate and show the limits of number-level attribution.

For print or direct mail, use a practical response path such as a short URL, QR code, code, or dedicated number. The same naming discipline can connect offline campaigns to the scorecard without pretending every influence is observable.

QA THE REPORT EVERY WEEK

Review unknown source, self-referrals, duplicate campaign names, and leads with source but no owner. Sample closed deals and trace them backward. Keep first known source and recent source separately when the sales cycle spans multiple visits; neither alone tells the full story.

UTMs describe recorded acquisition touchpoints. They do not establish causation or value by themselves. Pair them with qualified pipeline, closed revenue, and experiments when budget decisions require stronger evidence.
