RETARGETING ADS: A USEFUL REMINDER, NOT A SUBSTITUTE FOR DEMAND

Retargeting ads reach people after a prior visit or interaction. They can remind a buyer to finish a meaningful decision, but they can also take credit for sales that would have happened anyway. Use them for a defined audience and next step, with exclusions and a way to test whether they add value.

SEGMENT BY THE DECISION, NOT ONLY THE VISIT

A person who read a service guide is different from someone who requested an estimate. Build small, useful audiences around the stage and expected consideration period. Match creative to the question they still have: process, proof, comparison, timing, or a relevant offer.

Check audience size and platform requirements before promising a campaign. For low-traffic local businesses, email, sales follow-up, or direct mail may be more practical than a tiny ad audience.

PROTECT THE EXPERIENCE

Exclude recent buyers, people who declined, irrelevant service areas, and audiences that should not be targeted. Set frequency and duration deliberately. Follow consent and platform rules for pixels and customer lists, especially when the data is sensitive.

Rotate creative when the audience will see it repeatedly. Repeating the same generic banner for weeks can spend money without adding useful information.

CHECK LIFT, NOT JUST ATTRIBUTED CONVERSIONS

Compare qualified conversations and sales with a holdout or other credible baseline where possible. Retargeting platforms can count a conversion after an ad view even when another channel drove the decision. Report spend, reach, frequency, incremental evidence, and the cost of the next action.

If the ads are simply following buyers who are already ready to purchase, improve the sales handoff instead. Retargeting is one tool in a larger sequence.

THE NEXT MOVE

USE REMINDERS WITH INTENT.

Map audience segments, exclusions, creative, and a test for incremental value.
