DIRECT MAIL MARKETING: MAKE PRINT PART OF THE REVENUE SYSTEM

Direct mail marketing earns its place when the audience, message, response path, and follow-up fit the economics of the sale. A well-designed piece can reach a household or account before a search begins, but the campaign still needs a job to do. Treat print as one part of a connected journey, not a one-time drop.

CHOOSE A REASON TO MAIL

Start with a specific audience: a neighborhood near current service routes, customers due for maintenance, open B2B accounts, or a high-value prospect list. Check data quality, delivery cost, coverage, and whether the business can fulfill the offer. A campaign to everyone often hides which segment is worth repeating.

The creative should address a real decision. A roofer might explain an inspection process; a distributor might show a category application. A postcard can open the conversation, but it should not try to carry a full proposal.

DESIGN THE RESPONSE AND HANDOFF

Use a short URL, QR code, dedicated number, or campaign code where practical. Keep the page and phone team aligned with the piece. Record mailing date, audience, geography, cost, creative, and offer, then give every response an owner and next step.

Do not make a complicated tracking mechanism the obstacle to responding. Some recipients will search the brand name later. Train the team to record self-reported source while acknowledging that memory and digital attribution are imperfect.

MEASURE AND IMPROVE THE NEXT DROP

Compare qualified responses, appointments or quotes, sold revenue, and margin with production and postage cost. Use matchback and a reasonable holdout when the volume supports it. Keep the time window and overlap with other channels visible.

Change one meaningful element at a time: audience, offer, creative, or timing. The best direct mail program learns from the sales result, not only the scan count.

THE NEXT MOVE

CONNECT THE MAILBOX TO THE SALE.

Scope the list, creative, response path, follow-up, and proof of return before spending on print.
