CUSTOMER LIFETIME VALUE IN MARKETING: USE IT TO MAKE BETTER DECISIONS
Customer lifetime value estimates what a customer contributes over the relationship, not just at the first purchase. It helps compare channels and retention programs, but the number depends on repeat behavior, margin, churn, and a sensible time horizon. Treat it as a decision model with assumptions, not a universal constant.

CALCULATE FROM REAL COHORTS
Start with customers acquired in the same period or source. Add revenue over a defined horizon, subtract direct costs where possible, and account for refunds or service costs. For a recurring service, look at renewals and churn. For distribution, look at reorder frequency and category expansion. A single average across unlike customers will mislead.
A simple starting estimate is average gross profit per purchase multiplied by expected purchase frequency and relationship duration. Show the assumptions beside the result and update them as cohorts mature.
USE VALUE TO CHOOSE SPEND
Compare acquisition cost with realistic customer contribution, payback time, and capacity. A source with expensive first orders may still be attractive if customers renew or expand profitably. The opposite can also happen: cheap leads may require costly service or leave quickly.
Do not let a projected lifetime value justify unlimited front-end spend. Cash timing, margin, cancellation risk, and fulfillment capacity matter. Review the range of outcomes, not only the best cohort.
IMPROVE THE WHOLE RELATIONSHIP
Map the moments that predict a second purchase, renewal, referral, or cancellation. Test welcome journeys, service reminders, reorder prompts, and customer success outreach where they add value. Measure incremental retention and contribution, not email opens alone.
Lifetime value is most useful when sales, operations, and marketing agree on the same customer definition and use it to choose the next investment.
THE NEXT MOVE
MEASURE THE NEXT PURCHASE.
Build source cohorts and retention workflows around contribution, not first-sale revenue alone.
